Strike @ 3:23 PM

A couple of days ago I read a great article on the morals of an actor written by Kirsten Tretbar. After I was done the reading I sat back for a while questioning myself and my morals. How far will I be willing to go to just make it in the industry? Hollywood is a land of many opportunities but, to get there you must sacrifice something in return.

You might even have to sacrifice what you believe is right or wrong or, have to go out of your comfort zone to play a role. To be able to land a job you need a keep an open mind. There will be some roles you try out for in this industry that you may not necessarily believe in. Just keep in mind that you are acting and are portraying a whole different persona on screen. For me personally, I have a line that I’ve drawn for myself. This is a line that I will never cross; it’s not just for my personal beliefs but also because of my family and my religion. There are just some things as an actor I am not willing to do. I know it’s not good to be picky when you start out in the industry, but I’m not going to play a role I don’t believe in. In order to give a scene my all, I must be the character and if I’m not comfortable then it’s not the role for me. I go by the saying ‘you win some, you lose some’. Always be optimistic and the time will come for you to shine.

The things I know as an actor I will not do, is show nudity on screen or smoke. Those two are big ones for me because they’re things that I can’t even imagine doing, ever. I’m not saying people who play roles like that don’t have morals, but it’s more of a personal boundary.  I find it unnecessary to do any of those, and if the time comes I won’t try out for a role like that in the first place.

I am quite optimistic when it comes to auditioning for roles but some things I can’t even consider in my book. Playing villainous roles or profanity I don’t have a big problem with at all. I know I’ll be playing a character so it’ll be easier to get into that mindset. Whereas, if I were to do a nudity scene, I won’t be able to concentrate because I’d be so uncomfortable.  It’s really important to know who you are and what you stand for in order to really achieve your dreams.
